Okay guys/gals,

I know that general industry rule is that the galvanized coating is to be removed, but i cannot find any supporting documentation.

I have looked in D19.0, couldn't find were it specifically states that the coating is to be removed.

I looked in D1.1 section 5.15, but it doesn't say explicitly that the coating shall be removed.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

AWS D1.1:2010, 5.15
"Surfaces to be welded, and surfaces adjacent to a weld, shall also be free from...other foreign material that would prevent proper welding or produce objectionable fumes."
Does that cover it?

I would agree WeldinFool, in my experience galvanize effects the proper welding. D1.1 also says if it produces objectionable fumes. Google defines objectionable as "arousing distaste or opposition; unpleasant or offensive" I believe galvanize produces objectionable fumes.

Also, WeldinFool covered the new structure. Just in case it is a repair D1.1 2010 8.5.1 also states that "The portion of surface to be welded be thoroughly cleaned of all foreign matter." That should cover you according to D1.1
