dear friends

can you help me to understand this connection?

1) is this consider as T-K-Y connection for box tube welding as per AWS D1.1?

2) if this is in a horizontal fixed position, what must be the welding position the welder must be qualified based on AWS D1.1?

Hello Bert, I would not call this a "TKY" application, I do believe that you need to have your welder(s) qualified for an all-position unlimited qualification (3G, 4G if the parts are more than a 3/4" tube or plate thickness that is being welded) as you have both overhead and vertical welding present if you are not rotating this item. If you are rotating this, then a partial certification encompassing the 3G position would suffice. Others can likely expand on my answer. Best regards, Allan

thank you

if we remove the backing, and qualified the welder for one side welding without a backing in 3G & 4G position, is it possible as per AWS D1.1? will it fall under t-k-y connection if the backing is removed?

I agree with Allan's position that this is not a T, K, or Y connection, so a typical plate qualification should suffice. Whether the welder must be qualified for all position, vertical, or simply flat is dependent on what position the tube to plate joints are welded.

sir you mean figure 4.28 and 4.29, must be used to qualify the welder if the backing is removed? i thought this is not a t-k-y connection.

You mentioned there were two different joints, a plate to the end of the HSS and a T-joint without backing between two HSS. The T required the T,K, and Y performance test and procedure test.

Al,

What's with that common sense and code book stuff? Use the other big red book. It's a lot easier.

No kidding.

About time for a revision if I can get the committee together.
