Single V Grove weld test
Table 4.10
1G
3/8 plate with backer
Joint = B-U2a-GF
If a welder has taken and passed the above mentioned test, are they then qualified to weld lap and corner joints as well?

Hello d_paul71, I believe that thickness and position will be the limiting factors. Best regards, Allan

If the test was administered using the tolerances listed by B-U2a-GF, examples: the root opening was allowed to be increased to anything other than 1/4 inch, or if the root opening was less than 1/4 inch, or the groove angle anything other than 45 degrees, the welder is not qualified per AWS D1.1. The question is moot.

Thank you both.
I ask because I have filled out a cert for a welder and said that they were qualified to weld lap and corner joints.

Would you both suggest I remove that from the cert?

If so, what test shall be performed to qualify the above mentioned joints?

I think what Al was alluding to (he will correct me if I'm wrong) is that to qualify a welder (performance) on plate in compliance with D1.1 one of the following figures shall be used.

Fig 4.21 for Unlimited Thickness
Fig 4.30 Optional for Horizontal unlimited
Fig 4.31 for Limited thickness
Fig 4.32 Optional for Horizontal limited thickness

These are the only test assemblies the code prescribes for welder performance qualification on plate (Groove Welds)

As far as qualifying for corner joints goes, I think that is another question entirely :)
See Fig 3.3 TC-P9-GF  or B-P9-GF

You read my mind all too good Lawrence.

It is all too common for people to apply the tolerance of a prequalified joint detail to welder performance qualification. They simply do not apply to performance qualification. Likewise the figures 4.1 and 4.2 have little to do with performance qualification other than to determine which test position must be applied. The figures delineate the tolerances to be applied to the position of the test assemblies while taking the test.

Best regards - Al

Hello Al, thank you for that clarification. I didn't look at B-U2a-GF and definitely don't know it's description off of the top of my head. Best regards, Allan
