Hello dick, oddly enough "coat hangers" and "baling wire" are actually pretty good filler metals for OFW, other than the paint or shellac on some of the coat hangers. It is a reasonably good quality steel in an annealed condition in most instances. Best regards, Allan

Hi Allen, I forgot about baling wire, but that was what I used at my first go at welding with my dad some 40-50yrs ago. Later used coat hangers (not the shiney ones) to weld car exhaust systems, worked great.
OFW brought back memories.

Yup, did a bit of that myself back on the farm (not mine though). Best regards, Allan

Coincidental, that's the same year I tried it for the first time. Was not impressed, but it was used for repairing the irrigation lines that kept getting shot up with .22's around the area. Best regards, Allan
