This can be a good source for basic questions.

Look for posts answered by Michael Kaiser, Arthur Slaughter, John Odom.

Do NOT use (such as Kingsford) bbq. brickettes! A chemical inhibiter is added to retard flame up and intense heat.
Actual hardwood charcoal is sold now and is supposed to work pretty good.
Coal is the cheapest, and you will "process" it into coke so save a few bucks and get bituminous if possible. Anthracite is a pain to work with and is a steep learning curve. Fast and easy is to buy a 20# or 50# bag of coke from a Farriers supplier.

About how big is a blacksmith forge and a price range. Can you get one that will use propane or natural gas. Kent I'm glade you brought this up very interesting.

I would vote for a coke forge. I would not recommend coal only as you would be artificially limiting yourself.
Some people avoid coke forges at first, then regret it later.

Coal/coke will get hotter than propane.
If I were using it at work (as in I don't have to pay the light bill!) there are some good plans for induction heaters on the internet.
I built my last forge in an afternoon out of some 1/4" plate (for the fire pan), and a hair dryer for the air blast.

Hello John, a chunk of pipe, some kaowool (I know I spelled that one wrong), and the blower from a dishwasher work pretty good as well, but this was for use with propane. Best regards, Allan

An 0.035" GMAW tip is the orifice for propane.
Grammar police time. Kaowool is spelt with an uppercase K...

Thanks John, I guess I was playing hookie the day that was covered. Allan

I also hear that stovetop vent fans and a dimmer switch work good for a blower since it is already a variable speed motor.

Strange how my spelling ability has diminished. I was the school spelling bee champ once...
Need to spend more time with my youngest daughter (the English Lit Professor). WOW, my "Baby" is 35 today. Hope she is having too much fun in Tahoe to return my text...

Yup, they grow up quick, don't they John? My oldest turned 33 just the other day and the youngest is 23, then I've got 2 others 27 and 29 respectively these coming months. Hope you're getting some well deserved rest and preparing for your next adventure? Best regards, Allan
