many decades ago
we used copper heat sinks
at the ends of aluminum welds
to draw out the excess heat
still doing this?
or a better way
sincerely,
Kent

I think it's a good way.

Have a toolbox full of copper, plate, strip, bar and shapes for using as heat sinks...

Not just for aluminum either :)

If it's not broke, don't fix it. There are several gadgets and purpose made materials out there, but none that I can find have any distinctive advantage over old school copper devices.

Lots of copper! And with how easy it is to anneal and form to the needed shape for the oddball repair... Indispensable.
Used a nice long strip today to take a weld test on 1/8" Al.
Random bits of various stainless's work too...Not as good as copper but still plenty functional.
