We have a vessel we have welded using FCAW, ACA backgouged, and welded as full penetration.
We have a copper colored skin on the outside of the cover pass. Any ideas what caused this, heat
or possible copper pick up from ACA?

Probably just the oxidation layer... Typically no problem at all unless your construction standard has provisions against it.

I agree with Lawrence.

The copper or gold coloration is the best expect color in welding SS. So it has no influence to the welds.

It may not affect the mechanical properties, but it does affect the corrosion resistance for the internal surface of pipe containing a fluid that is aggressive (the primary reason one would used SS rather than carbon steel).

The oxidized layer is a dissimilar metal compared to the unoxidized layer. Thus galvanic reactions are supported and corrosion can progress rather rapidly depending on the fluid being conveyed.

If the discoloration is on the outside surface, it probably isn't detrimental mechanically, but aesthetically; a bummer.

What series 300 - 400.  Good color. just don't use a steel wire brush, this will cause a surface rust on the welds. Stainless on stainless. unless painted then no issues.

I am going to stay out
but if I did put something in
silver ie(stainless color) or blue is good color
gold is half good
but need to know shielding gas
argon is best
and many other things I need to know do this correct
sincerely,
Kent

Hello Kent, since you did "get in", do you mean to say that silver indicates the least inclusion of atmosphere, gold is a step down, and blue is the lowest step of these 3 colors? I believe that this would be the correct progression of the three colors you have mentioned. Respectfully, Allan

Allan,
I like gold myself
but was told by my mentors silver was best
then blue
and silver is by them best and least atmosphere,
in the weld puddle
so my mentors told me
1. silver
2. gold
3. blue
now times change and the old men I learned from are
not with us anymore
and all the info I use came from 1960 something:eek::red:
but I do not think metallurgy changed any:wink:
sincerely,
Kent

Hello Kent, I am not trying to be argumentative (meant very light heartedly). However, your own 1,2,3 list agrees with what I said in my first reply. Your verbal description in this latest post doesn't agree with the 1,2,3 list that you included, or at least as I understand it from your commentary. Respectfully, Allan

Allan,
your correct
sometimes my meds make me not think right:eek::sad:
rest of the time I am just a nitwit:red::wink:
sorry for my wrong info
sincerely,
Kent

Hello Kent, I know that you are far from a nit-wit. I have followed enough of your responses on here to know otherwise. I also understand about meds and such, my folks are 90 and 88 respectively and at this very moment I am dealing with their care and some of the many challenges that age, hospitalization, and medications present. Have a great day and best regards, Allan

welding 304 to itself, E 316 LT 1 FCAW, straight CO2 gas.
