I have welders qualified to D1.1, D1.2, D1.3 and D1.6 in GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and FCAW. Those codes say the welder only need to weld in the PROCESS they are qualified for in each 6 month period to keep qualifications current.

My question:

Can welders keep their qualifications current across different codes? For example... Welder qualified in GTAW to D1.6 for stainless steel and qualified in GTAW to D1.2 for aluminum. Does just the act of welding GTAW keep all GTAW qualifications current? Or do they need to also weld using the metal the code addresses?

Process is process, base metal is not a factor
