Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / D1.4 USING CARBON EQUIVALENT FOR ELECTRODE SELECTION

I am writing a PQR/WPS for welding reinforcing bar.  The bar was from an unknown source (existing construction) so I had a lab perform an analysis.
The Carbon equivalent came back as 0.58.  The grade is unknown.  Markings on bar only indicate billet steel.
D1.4 table 5.2 lets me select preheat based on C.E.
D1.4 table 5.1 lets me select electrode based on material group and material specification without mention of C.E.
Is there a correlation between C.E and material specification ?

Thanks
Kelly

Hey Kelly,
I don't have D1.4 but have 2 cents.

You calculate CE based on the material spec.  You need the chemical composition to try to match with a steel.  Without the chem comp. you would be guessing.

Careful with the material groups.  The CE differ vastly within each group.
