Up Topic Welding Industry / ASME Codes / Maximum allowed thickness without impacts ASME IX:2010

Hi Folks,

What is the maximum allowed thickness allowed by ASME IX in a qualification before having to perform impacts?

I am qualifying a  ASTM A333 Gr 6 3/4" Dia  x 3.91mm w/t pipe to ASTM A350 LF2 Flange in accordance with ASME IX: 2010

Material is too small to allow removal of a charpy sample. Is this acceptable?

Thanks

In ASME IX its 5/8" where there is a change in fracture mechanism. But IX is not your problem. You need to review the Code of construction. In B31.3 and Section VIII, the two most prominent CVN codes, there will be temperature/thickness curves to consider.

Just to add to JS55's response; the annex in the back of the construction code will indicate what group the base metal belongs to, i.e., A, B, C, D, to properly use the graph in the code. So, four factors:

1)  The applicable construction code,
2)  Base metal group (different from the P-number found in Section IX),
3)  Lowest anticipated service temperature (from the engineer), and
4)  Thickness of the base metal being welded.

The construction can severely limit the base metals qualified for production based on the P-number and the group number of the base metal used when qualifying the WPS. In the case of B31.3 high pressure fluid service, the WPS is limited to the base metal specifications used when qualifying the WPS.

Best regards - Al

Thanks Guys :grin::grin::grin:

Much appreciated

Quite frankly I've never understood why IX has a CVN threshold AT ALL. It just confuses things. B31T is available for those codes without specific requirements like B31.4 or B31.8, or even CVN applications for materials used in non CVN codes for example Grade 91 when used for B31.1 applications. Though I hate B31T.
