Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / WPS for S235jr (Equivalent to astm a 283)

Please Clarify , ASTM A 283 material is not specified in AWS d1.1 , Table 3.1.but as in aws b2.1 it mentioned as Group 1 material so my doubts are

1)is it possible to use prequalified WPS for this material
2)in AWS  d1.1  table 4.8 saying about unlisted steel . so is this an unlisted steel and is it require a separate PQR,

Awaiting Valuable response,

Regards ,

JP

B2.1 has nothing to do with D1.1, unless you have a SWPS developed under the auspices of B2. committee and the Engineer (representing the Owner) approves the use of the SWPS.

The alternative is to qualify the WPS and the Engineer still has an opportunity to say yes or no.

My question is, "Who specified the use of ASTM A283 and why?"

Thank you AL for your valuable response,,,,,as we were going to fabricate a batching plant structure...in that the the material spec is bs en S235jr....i first plan to use a prequalified wps .... but on table 3.1 (aws d1.1 2010) its equivalent astm material ( A283C) is not listed ...so finally  the only option is to qualify the wps am i right????

Where is the plant being constructed and what welding standards apply?

If D1.1 applies, the Engineer is the individual tasked with making the  decision that the material is similar enough to a prequalified base metal to be considered "prequalified". If the chemistry and mechanical properties are similar to a prequalified base metal the Engineer can say, "Close enough for me!" Then proceed as if it were prequalified. In the absence of a commitment from the Engineer, there is little option other than to qualify the WPS if D1.1 is applicable.

Best regards - Al
