Up Topic Welding Industry / ASME Codes / Using jointed plate for PQR of SAW on horizontal joint

Dear experts,

By mistake we did not read the client's requirement carefully. There is a clause: PQR for SAW must be in 4 M long plate.

We have many extra plate but non of them are 4 M long.

I am planning to joint 2 plates : 1.5 M and 2.5 M so total 4 M.

Is there any clause in ASME IX that we can not use jointed plate for PQR ? In other word, we must use full length plate for PQR.

Your comments is highly appreciated.

A requirement for a 4 meter long coupon is ridiculous.  What tests are required?  Why does it need to be 4 M long?  There is no prohibition from joining plates to make a coupon longer in Sect. IX.  Make it longer than 4 M so the joined area can be noted to discard as it will have an additional heat affected zone where the cross joint is.

Longer than 4M would be better, you also need run on and run off room to get the SAW started and stopped.

Your question about extending existing plate and if it's ok should be verified through the customer.

D1.1 calls for a 36 inch length in certain cases. I guess that is close enough to call it a 1 meter length. However, 4 meters is about 13 feet long. I guess they want a lot of samples!
