Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Back Gouging, need a 'U/J' Groove? (Pictures included)

Hey All,

I've got two illustrations for ya. Will Option 1 lead me to the weld shown on the right, or will Option 2 lead me to the weld shown on the right?

The question is, when performing a back gouge, does one need to show a st ep in the welding symbol indicating that that 'U/J" groove created by back gouging needs to be treated as a groove, or is it assumed, any weld made ontop of said back-gouge is sufficient?

Thanks!

Personally, I think Option 1 is sufficient.

Especially since 'backgouge' is shown in the tail I agree that Option 1 is very adequate.

It should be obvious to any relatively competent welder how the progression of operation goes.

Once you're backgouging from the other side, isn't it no longer a fillet weld?

The representation "looks like" a CJP T-joint with reinforcing fillets on both sides.

However the fillet size was not supplied :)
