I'm looking for some advice on TIG welding cast iron. I have a very nice ornamental cast iron patio set but movers broke one of the chairs foot. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has successfully welded this type of application before and, if so, what did you use for filler, preheat, etc., Would appreciate any advice!

Inco Alloys, now known as Special Metals Welding Products Co. has a great sellection of filler metals for cast irons, ductile, etc. I have welded many cast materials using Ni Rod 55, 44, 99. Try calling them at 1-800-624-3411 and ask for Evan Hinshaw Tech. Support or try their web site at www.specialmetalswelding.com. Hope this is of some value.

Have you ever done it with an ER80S series?

No.

Yes and ER70S-2 also. But Ni-Rod is better.

Techalloy, Natweld, Inweld and others have a nickel 55 tig wire that would work quite well in your app.
Aluminum bronze A2 would also be a good choice if color match is not a problem.

Brazing, by torch or tig, is an alternative as well.

There is a square cast iron rod for torch apps. that works well, too. Does take some heat, though.

Cast iron is funny. What works on todays job may not work tomorrow.
Have a few of these alloys around and use what works best.

if you have questions, let me know!!

Good Luck

Consider brazing- the metal will sweat into the crack if you get it hot enough and make a nice repair with no raised bead. Bronze and cast iron have similar strength so the repair should be as strong as the surrounding material.

I've repaired small cast iron things by preheating to dull red heat and mig welding with er70s2 wire. Nothing scientific but they stuck.

I too would prefer the nirod filler if I did the repair by welding.

We have had excellent results usuing GTAW 2% thoriated tungsten, and ER409 stainless.

You say that you used 409 stl. st . on cast-iron.I like to use nyrod 99.
