AWS D1.1  - what is meant by "out-of-position" weld?    "  ...7/16 in or less in diameter for out-of-position welds"

"In position" = welding in the flat position

When welding “out of position” (i.e., horizontal, vertical, overhead positions), you are welding against gravity. Now you are much more limited as to the size of the molten puddle you can carry; the puddle can run and\or "mis-behave" due to the force of gravity pulling on the molten puddle.

You also have answers in another post you made on this subject.  Please, only post a question in one thread.  It can really confuse some discussions to have people responding in different locations.
