Up Topic American Welding Society Services / Certifications / CWI Exam Part B Practical Inspection Samples

Are the samples below representative of the Part B samples ?

I thought I read somewhere that when inspecting the pipe samples for the new part B, one has to use a mirror (full size samples; not half sections) to .
view the back weld side (root).

Is that correct ?

Yes, REPRESENTATIVE.  Since I can't see them well enough to know exactly what they are to do a comparison.  But, it is fair to say they are representative.

Now, I don't remember there being a mirror in the tool kit.  But, since I was overseeing the exams not taking them it is hard to say.  Funny what you forget when your life isn't on the line.

Thanks Brent.

Are they still giving the seminar attendees the HST Welding Inspector's Toolkit at the week-long seminars - or - the 10-piece toolkit that includes a mirror ?

HST Toolkit

- Weld Gauge (Palmgren)
- Micrometer 0-25.4 mm
- Magnifier
- Ruler
- Dial Caliper 0-150mm
- Fillet Weld Gauge
- VWAC (undercut) Gauge

The 10-piece toolkit includes the C4.1-77 Surface Roughness Guide, Hi-Lo Gage and mirror -- but no Palmgren gage.

- 0-150mm Dial Caliper
- 6" Scale w/ Clip
- 2" Reading Glass
- 7 Piece Fillet Weld Set
- V-WAC Gauge
- Inspection Mirror
- Hi-Lo Gage
- Protractor
- C4.1 gage

It's the new 10 piece kit.  Besides the Automatic Weld Sizing (AWS) Gauge or Palmgren Gauge, there is also no micrometer anymore.

And, from what I was just recently told, there is a new gauge being included, at least for the test if not in the kit, that measures fillet weld reinforcing dimensions.  An interesting tool that they came up with.  I am hoping it is in the kits from now on but I will have to buy my own.

LOL... the dial caliper looks like it is all plastic... :yell:

It is plastic  :(
In the Beta class we did have to use a mirror to check a root pass on the pipe samples. I dont know if its because they were brand new or what but these replicas are MUCH better than the old ones

Brent,

If you don't mind, can you keep us posted about this new gage they are adding.

All I got was a plastic flashlight

HJLBX

Please note that the specimens in your pic were more representative of the old part B.  The new part B also includes full penetration pipe butt-welds, bevel angles, root openings and rough cut surfaces which must be evaluated.

Thanks David.

I figured since the 10-piece toolkit was being given to seminar week participants that on the new Part B all of the individual tools probably would need to be used during the exam.

Therefore, I figured full pipe sample(s) (instead of half-sections) that require back weld side (root) inspection with a mirror.

I suppose 1 + 1 = 2, but one can just never know for sure without asking a lot of questions in advance...

Remember too, Al and I mentioned in another thread that the samples for the seminar are different from those used in the exam.  Totally.  So there is no way to pre- study the exact parts and 'know' the answers.  Different sized pipe in diameter and wall thickness.  Other differences as well.

Yes.  I remember you both saying the actual Part B samples are completely different from the seminar practice samples.

Thanks.

Well, if this will work I will attach the announcement I got with a description of the tool.  Hopefully this is not top secret information, at least, it won't be for long.

I was told it will be $45 plus shipping from GAL Gauge.  I have not looked it up and verified that yet.

That's a heck of a lookin thing!

I can't wait to see how TSA reacts to one of those.

I had a 20 minute sing-a-long with TSA a week ago about my V-Wac that took 5 agents a supervisor and a conference call.

I'm really hard headed about not wanting to check bags  :)

Always arrive at security 2 hours prior to departure if you are a CWI

I feel your pain Larry.
I had one TSA agent a while back overly nervous about a paint marking pen with a mixing ball inside and a bridge cam gage.

Yeah,

We always had Darrell check his tools in a checked bag...then he lost an entire set of tools: v-wac, bridge cam, fillet welds gauges, tape, and more.  Ouch.

Yep $45. Just ordered me one from GAL.

let us know how it is

I can't wait to play with it with my daughter the Mining Engineer. We're both kinda tool/gizmo junkies for unique designs. Both of us have been known to buy something we'll never use...
It will come after I'm offsite and between gigs.
What I've been needing lately is an extended/oversized V-Wac type gadget to measure reinforcement (or lack of) on 3 inch wide caps. Heavy wall large bore pipe like 8" XXS up to 30" gets tough (optical illusion) and I can't pack enough gizmos around to effectively measure them.

TimGary,
Excellent! Thanks for the suggestion.

We could have used one of those gauges a couple weeks ago on a D1.5 submerged arc flange to web fillet weld on cut girders. The weld profiles were severely out of tolerance on some of the more swept portions of the girder.

I ordered one as well. It will be cool to have even if I never need it again.

I am getting ready for cwi exam in july and have heard you can write topics and page numbers inside your codebook for things you might find on the exam is this true information?
Parent - - By welderbrent (*****) Date 06-21-2016 22:28
OKAY Ken, you already asked this, let's not go down the road to failure by asking the same question in different threads.  Especially someone else's thread.

sorry never been on a forum before and realized I did it wrong right after I posted . So I started my own.

Thanks, yes, and I thanked you for starting your own on that one.

So, with so much going on at work, home, and church planning for all kinds of 4th of July activities with a BBQ at our house I have been remiss.

Here are some personal pics of the new gauge in use.

No question as to if you are looking at a concave or convex fillet after using this gauge.  And fast and easy to see if the weld reinforcement is within code standards.
