Hi,

I am Rakhul, new to this forum recently completed my AWS-CWI.

I need to qualify Stellite Gr. 6 Hardfacing on Inconel 825 material.

Thickness will be 5mm & 30 mm in PTAW process.

I need to know, whether a buffer layer is required before hardfacing stellite Gr. 6 on Inconel 825?
If required, what will be the suitable buffer material to go with?

Please give your useful inputs to proceed.

I've never heard of a buffeing layer being needed. Stellite 6 is a cobalt based alloy and cobalt does well with nickel. Its the high carbon that makes stellite hard. If memory serves the cobalt is there for temp stability.

Thanks,

So which means, there will be no troubles on Hardfacing Stellite Gr. 6 on Nickel based alloys like  Inconel 825 / Monel.
There is no requirement of intermittent buffer layer.

Because we face some problems during / after overlaying Stellite Gr. 6 directly on above said base materials.
We have WPS for Stellite Gr. 6 overlay on Inconel 825 / Monel without buffer layer.

Most of the time in our production job, we face cracks/lack of fusion while hardfacing Stellite on Inconel 825 / Monel.
Is there any particular parameter / instruction to be taken care while hardfacing stellite on those materials?

Cracks are a part of hardfacing. Its called cross checking. And its how weldments relieve stresses. In fact, there are hardfacing procedures out there where you measure the number of cracks per linear inch to determine if you are welding it properly or not.
You need to consult with the manufacturer.

Thanks,

Yes, cracks are part of hardfacing. Is there any specific parameter to be controlled to minimize weldment relieving stress while hardfacing stellite on Inconel 825.

Why would you want to?

What will be the optimum pre-heat temperature required before welding Inconel 825?

825 is a nickel based austenitic. You don't need preheat.
