I have had good experience welding cast iron using high preheat, an oxy-acetylene torch, and cast iron rod (actual cast iron). In several cases the parts were previously repaired by someone else using SMAW and nickel based filler metal. Oh, one more important point, each time I've completed a welded repair I've buried the repaired part into a charcoal fire overnight to ensure very slow cooling.

Al with that technique do you use any kind of flux?

I believe I used a "cast iron" flux and to my wife's dismay, her electric range to preheat the parts to a nice high temp before using the torch to bring it up to full temperature. My advice, preheat it while your wife is shopping.
