FACT:

WPS/PQR (USED ASME IX ) had been approved by client, the detailed information lists as below:

Weld process: SMAW  (E-7018, ROOT, HOT AND CAP);BASE METEL: ASTM A36 (Plate)

THICKNESS: 12mm    Position: 2G/3G/4G  NO PRE-HEAT AND POST HEAT TREATMENT

AND ALL WELDER PASSED WELDER QUALIFICATION TEST AND CERTIFICATED BY THIRD PARTY AGENCY( BASED ON ASME IX ).

Question is:

   1) Shall  new WPS/PQR be done according to AWS D 1.1 ? (Same material, only one for storage oil tank and one for steel work.)

   2) Can welder's certificate(ASME IX ) be used for steel work ?

THANKS.

The engineer of record for the project may make that decision.  Nobody else.

See AWS D1.1 Clause 4

And Welcome to the Forum!

One should be aware that ASME Section IX has very little in the way of visual acceptance criteria. Porosity, overlap, maximum reinforcement, no problem mon.

The acceptance criteria for guided bend tests per Section IX is not as stringent as that found in D1.1.
