Folks,

For those in the know, I am trying to gather information about the pipe specimen which requires the candidate to measure the bevel angle on the prepared joint.

What is the size of the pipe?

What type of protractor or tool do they provide?

Two sizes of pipe, one for the seminar, one for the exam.  They have now included a couple of pipe specific inspections gauges in the kit you get to keep and in the one used during the exams.

Pipe specific inspection gages?  I heard of the hi-lo being added for root opening measurement but what else is there?

pic of kit

For Pipe: mirror, hi-lo, protractor, flashlight, and whatever else you may decide you need from the kit.

The newest addition is the fillet weld reinforcement gauge.  Probably not needed for pipe  .

They will show you what you need to know about getting any needed measurements with the tools provided at the seminar.

Is Attachment: DSCF6266-Copy.JPG (90k) the same gage as this:

That's the one.

That particular gage is not included in the tool kit, nor can it be used for the part B exam.

At this time that is correct, but I had gotten a notice that they were getting ready to use them now that GAL gauge has them in production.

My information could easily be mistaken.  Time will tell.

You  could be right.

The new fillet weld reinforcement gauge is new and therefore really should not be included in the exam since the tool has not had exposure in the field. I believe the plan is to have the tool available in the field for x months or years and then, once it has had some exposure, include it in the Cert exam.

It is a great tool though, and one that was a by-product creation of the redesign of the CWI Part B.

They have already made an instruction guide for the seminar instructors on the tool.

But, who knows.  Could be today, could be 2020.

Yeah, the ideal was always to teach how to use it (to seminar students) before it actually showed up on the exam to promote its use in the field.

They provide one gage for the entire seminar. I do not use it or demonstrate it. One gage for an entire class is a waste of time that can be put to better use.

I show the attendees how to use the fillet weld gages to check for excessive convexity. That is the tool they will need to use for the examination. When the new gage is included in the tool kit, I will show the attendees how to use it.

Very good point Al.  The time is short enough without taking time away from what is needed to show upcoming tools.
