Up Topic Welding Industry / Metallurgy / AWS D1.8 FCAW-S intermixing with other processes

Would the following condition be considered "intermixing" when using FCAW-S under the seismic provisions(AWS D1.8)?
The shop welds, using FCAW-G, a continuity plate with CJP welds on the flanges to complete the fabricated member, run off tabs removed and ends properly prepped. In the field the connection joint (CJP) to continuity plate and column flange, these shop welds intersect the field joint, the field joint is welded with FCAW-S, would this be intermixing? Does this now become "existing" base metal? Or is the intent of intermixing meant to be the processes combined during the specific joint to being welded?

Woody,

I believe you will find welding at any level where the welds intermix would be considered.  So, no, without testing and proof that your CVN's are good it is not allowed.

But, remember, this only applies to Demand Critical welds.  Just like additional testing of welders has specific application to the bottom flange in a beam to Column flange weld.

Bottom line, not every weld falls into D1.8 on any project.  Most of the welds will only be D1.1.
