A welder is qualified for 3/32" wire 1G, for D1.1 and D1.5.    Does that qualify same welder for 1/16 wire, pursuant to essential variables  one up/one down??

Hi Dave,

For D1.1
Keep in mind that 'welder performance' essential variables are found in table 4.12,   and that table does not include filler metal diameters.

So yes... If all other essential variables are good, the change in electrode wire diameter does not trigger a performance requalification.

Thank you, this can be a little confusing.

For D1.5, most of the variables for performance would be under para 5.24. Tak a look there.

Do understand that the electrode size on the D11.5 wps must be followed.

Dave,

Question: your mention of being in the 1G position??  Are you sure it wasn't the 2G?  If not, it really should have been.  That wire lends itself with some care to the horizontal position and then you are not limiting yourself to a strict downhand/flat weld.  Especially when considering the overlap with qualification to fillet welds and a flat fillet weld?  Well, that would mean a trough.  Most T joints for fillets are actually horizontal welds.

Brent,
is correct
in the shop 2G
in the field 3G, 4G, or pipe 6G
be able to weld:wink::smile:
and know what makes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
always do what is fast and easy:cool::smile:
then you make more $$$$$$$$$$$$$
much as use GMAW in the shop all you can
makes $$$$$$$$$$$$
much as use FCAW in the field makes $$$$$$$$$$$$$
we do things to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$
this is our job, not a hobby:eek::evil::twisted::wink:
all just IMHO
sincerely,
Kent
