I have a weld schedule for 6061-T6 to 6061-T6 tube butt weld.  Should I necessarily have to make changes to the schedule parameters if I want to weld in the O condition instead?  Spec references would be great to help me convince my quality manager.

No changes needed, but what are you shooting for as far as strength and ductility is concerned?

Just trying to complete a welder qualification per AWS D17.1 with material on-hand.  No specific strength/ductility required.

Do you have a WPS that tells you what filler metal to use?

Yes. Using ER4043 per AWS A5.10

So, if you have a qualified WPS, you must work within the ranges listed by the WPS. They cannot be changed by the welder. If the listed ranges are not observed, the welder fails.

Sorry if I was unclear.  I have a weld schedule for welding T6 to T6 and was wondering if I am going to need to change schedule parameters to successfully weld O condition instead.

Maggs

As far as GTAW or GMAW goes, the operator will not see much if any difference between T6 or Zero conditions.   The current, voltage, WFS, weld pool, etc. will not be noticeably different.

You may or may not see a difference in distortion control.

There will defiantly be a difference in mechanicals... But you did not ask about that.

I doubt the welders will be able to tell the difference.... But you should do a trial anyhow.

Thank you, Lawrence.  I didn't think there would be a difference in the weld activity.  Obviously the mechanical properties will be different, but for a welder qualification test, I don't care about that.

The welder can only weld what is listed by the WPS. If 6061-T6 is listed, then the welder is not permitted to weld 6061-T0.

Is heat treatment an essential variable?

Why not generate a WPS revision that just designates 6061 ?

Heat treatment is an essential variable in most welding standards. I would have to find my copy of D1.2 to see how it is handled by that standard.

Live and Learn !

I've done a lot of D1.2 production but never qualified a procedure

Thanks Al
