Hi All,

My project specification for PWHT calls for a soaking time of 1 hr per 25 mm weld thickness and all weld thicknesses above 32 mm shall be PWHT.  My production job thicknesses are 60 mm and 35 mm.  I've done a PQR test on 25 mm thick plate(which qualifies for all thicknesses) and have done PWHT with soaking time for 2.5 hr according to the specification and considering the max. job thickness of 60 mm. Since my soaking time for 35 thick plate is 1.4 hr only, does this PQR qualify for 35 mm thick plate also?  I had this doubt while reading the point no. 8 (PWHT) of table 4.6 in AWS D1.1:2015, which mentions the time range as supplementary essential variable. Pls give your valuable comments.

Regards.

Table 4.6 is used only if notch toughness (CVN testing) is required. You make no mention of  CVN, thus you do not have to use Table 4.6. Table 4.5 and clause 5 with regards to PWHT is sufficient.

My recommendation is to subject the test assembly to the PWHT describes in Clause 5, then follow Clause 5 for all production welds with regards to temperature and hold time, etc.
