Dear Experts,

In AWS D 1.1, is there a 1 GR test position for box tubes? I didnt see any indicative diagrams in the respective  test positions figures  in D1.1. Pls help.

Regards,

Do you mean 'Rotated' or 'Restricted'?

Okay, first of all it would be nice if we knew which edition of D1.1?  Presuming 2015 we need to consider a few things:

Look at 9.12 which will refer you to Figures 9.17 and 9.18 as well as 4.1 and 4.2.  When reviewing this clause and these Figures you will notice that the 1G position is rolled as pipe.  The 2G and 3G positions can be done with pipe OR tube and is stationary.  The 5G, 6G and 6GR positions are stationary with pipe only.

So, as far as D1.1:2015, or any earlier edition, goes there is no 1 GR.  1G would be done with pipe being rolled either by hand or in a rotation table or rollers.  The 'R' does not stand for 'rolled' so don't confuse your designations.

Is there something more specific we can help you identify and locate.

Brent,I was refering to AWS D1.1:2015 itself. With 1GR, I meant welding a box tube by rotating in 1G position. Does the code allow such a test position in case of box tubes?

It is my understanding that it would fall under the 'F' 'F,H' 'V' & 'OH' terminology for box tube section. Given you were performing a CJP or a PJP weld joint.

The 1GR does not exist as far as I am aware - 6GR yes.
