Hi all,

We have some welds using code AWS D1.1-2015 on structural beam using base material A387 Gr.11 Cl2 and we haven't had any experience before.
Some questions:
1/ Is it required preheat, interpass heat treatment, post weld heat treatment?
2/ If any heat treatment required, which code we follow? As I read, A387 isn't listed in heat treatment instructions in AWS code, and 690 degrees Celsius heat treatment for A387 in ASME code (i don't remember excatly)
3/ Any other special requirement?

Thanks.

Hi binhjack, this is when you really need a experienced welding engineer to provide input.

that is a Cr-Mo steel (like the P11 steel is), and the percentages of Cr and Mo in these steels make them form martensitic phases easily (very brittle and hard), which means most of these steels require preheat and postweld heat treatment to avoid cracking.

There are some cases, however, where you can omit PWHT if you do preheat. As suggested before me, consult with a specialist in these kinds of steels so that you can perform the job with the correct parameters and procedures

Please give guidance to prepare WPS for welding A387 without PWHT by PQR ASTM A335 Gr.P22 qualified using AWS D1.1 without  PWHT.
A335 & A387 not listed in D1.1.
