It will depend upon what the Contract Documents specify for the governing code and what your specific responsibilities are in the inspections.

If they are built with Alum for the supports and the ramp as well as the railing then more than likely D1.2 will apply.  If you are doing the Special Inspections then you may also have to work with IBC: 2012 and even a bit of AISC as to the frequency of inspections as IBC pretty well defers to AISC Chapter N for 'Before', 'During', and 'After' Welding inspections.

So wait, i noticed that the book talks plate and pipe. All handrails and 1 type ramp are square and round tubing. Expanded metal is also used. So is the code not applicable?

I would direct the question to the Engineer if this is a construction build.

If you are representing a manufacturer, designing and manufacturing a product, more latitude made be taken with regards to selecting the welding standard that is appropriate.

Since these could be viewed as "safety" related, I would review OSHA and the building codes before making an arbitrary decision.

Yeah, this is a production manufacturer. We make alot of different options for accessibility(wheelchair and commercial). They were interested in finding a code as they could add the "title" to their sales pitch(did i say that right). Any idea on what code we could use to get there? Thnx for the time

D1.2 sounds reasonable.

Maybe take a peek at AWS B2.1 and see if that fits your situation better?

I agree that AWS D1.2 would be better for the structural welding of aluminum.
