Hi all
We need to weld 8mm thick plate of Normalized AISI 1040 plate with Annealed AISI 1040 plate using SMAW as per AWS D1.1. Is this allowed? Would this affect mechanical properties of finished weld?

Thank you in advance

The properties of normalized and annealed 1040 are not that different. The preheat is the important consideration. Since the chemistry is the same, the preheat is the same. If possible, preheat the entire assembly to reduce the thermal gradient from one area to the next to ensure slow cooling and reduce residual stress and distortion. Long joints offer a high degree of restraint, so increased preheat is a good idea.
