Good Day, I need your help - I have a welder that is qualified on FCAW D1.1 Filler metal specification A5.29 (Position 3G&4G) and also qualified on FCAW D1.6 Filler Material specification 5.22 (Position 3G).

my question is, on 6 month validation, can you used AWS D1.1 results to automatically validate D1.6?

Material is not an essential variable on AWS D1.1, does this count for D1.6 as well?

Thank you

I'm looking at the 2007 edition:

Clause 4.7.9 Period of Effectiveness (1) infers that if the welder uses the qualified "process" they remain in qualification.

If you have concerns about the welders ability to do the work after a long period (specific reason to question the welders ability) you can retest as well via 4.7.9 (2)

So if the welder has been working in "process" even if to another code,  I don't think a requalification is required.

I Also think that it is not needed, but now im concerned about the essential variable (2007 Edition) in 4.9.1 - Electrode and Shielding Medium. .... Shall be considered qualified to weld with the same electrode F-number as classified in Table 4.5. (Table 4.5 mention A5.1, A5.5, A5.4 other than austenitic and duplex, A5.4 austenitic and duplex, A5.9, A5.18, A5.28, A5.22, A5.11, A5.14)

So basically I want to use A5.29 (D1.1) to update A5.22 (D1.6), im not sure I im allowed to now, cause that I how I usually did it.

Otherwise im going to have to requalify all my AWS D1.6 welders.

As long as the welder uses the process the qualification is valid unless, as Lawrence points out, there is a reason to question the welder's ability. So, whether the welder is welding the same base metal, to the same code, same positions, etc. makes no difference. The qualification is still valid.

The key to 4.9.1 is the term "welding operator"

It has everything to do with mechanized or machine processes and really nothing to do with period of effectiveness for a "welder"

You are good to go.

The tables in D1.6 you mention are strictly related to production,,, Not to continuity period of effectiveness.
