Dear friends
I have doubt if Asme sec. 9 qualify pipe welder. he can weld structural job without qualify AWS D1.1.. ?

I don't think so, these are two different codes, the welder should be tested and certified through AWS D1.1.

There is a very remote possibility since the engineer may except previous qualifications that were to other codes.  See D1.1 Clause 4.2.2.1.

I would doubt too, better to just get properly qualified to the applicable code.

ASME's acceptance criteria is not as stringent as that used by AWS D1.1. For instance, ASME Section IX has no criteria for undercut, overlap, excessive face or root reinforcement, porosity, etc. Likewise ASME Section IX acceptance criteria for guided bend tests is not as stringent as that of AWS D1.1.

Few Engineers that understand the differences between the two welding codes would accept Section IX qualification in lieu of AWS D1.1 for structural steel applications.
