we have a wps for a manual gtaw weld, there is no amperage range only a maximum amperage call out. The code is d17.1 and the customer does not specify the weld settings.  5.4.2  says qualification for manual weld settings is not required. My question is why does NADCAP require me to have a range.

not my forte' (jump in Al, Brent, Lawrence...etc. etc.)
you need a WPS for the paper trail
as the welder I throw it away:evil::twisted::wink::razz:
I use my knowledge to set the range and all other things:cool::smile::yell:
but if something goes wrong:eek:
everyone has to have things in writing
judges and courts like that
just my thoughts
sincerely,
Kent

Not my arena, D17.1 is for real inspectors and weldors.  I have it on the shelf and after the first perusal it has never been back off.

Good luck.

Hi Walker.

You may find some helpful commentary in D17 2010 Clause G3.4 that provides  some reasoning for it's position on "settings."

I think maybe the take by the D17 committee (I am not speaking for them) is a bit more progressive/realistic and takes into consideration how work might really get done on the shop floor.  In a nutshell I believe they view that process control is accomplished by methods and means other than operator machine setting ranges.

Perhaps NADCAP has just not seen their way to embrace the D17 view.   Perhaps nobody from NADCAP has thought to consider there is a difference, or why there is a difference.
