Hey All,
So I was recently asked to give some insight on API-1104. I've touched base with it before, but that's about it. I understand that it is a standard for the construction of cross country pipelines, either gas or liquid. Now from what I've read, API gives you the criteria for procedure qualifications and welder qualifications. But what throws me off is when ASME B31.4 and B31.8 are thrown into the mix. So I know B31.4 is for liquid, and B31.8 is for gas. Meaning, ASME B31.4 or B31.8 is the code for which the line is being built to and API-1104 is the construction standard? I'm just trying to wrap my head around it, I have none of the books which I'm sure doesn't help. I'm just trying to explain to my superiors what it is all about. Thanks for the insight in advance. This forum has helped me out a lot!

API 1104 is not a design standard, so one must look elsewhere for design. That is where the ASME construction codes (Section I for power boiler, Section VIII for unfired pressure vessels, B31.3 for process piping, etc.) step in to fill the void.

1104 is like ASME IX, welding only.
