Referencing Table 4.8 AWS D1.1/D1.1 M:2015

Is ASTM 285 Grade C considered a group I or group II material? I can not find it formally listed in section 3 or 4.

We are trying to qualify a wide variety of base metals and want to know if ASTM 516 Grade 70 welded to itself (group II to group II) will cover ASTM 285 Grade C to another group I or group II material or require a separate PQR/WPS?

Good Day Tony,

ASTM A285 Gr C is a Pressure Vessel plate.

While its' tensiles fall within D1.1 scope, it is not included in the D1.1 Tables of Pre-Qualified materials so cannot be used unless submitted to all the Clause 4 tests to become Approved By Testing with a PQR.

Since it is not in that category, no other tests on other steels will do any good.  You must get your procedure approved through Clause 4 testing.

IF it were in Table 3.1, then you would just have to make sure your WPS included it in the way it is prepared or re-write one to include it.  BUT, it isn't there.

Thus, your direct question, it needs another/new PQR for its' use.

BTW, where did you get a D1.1:2017?  The last edition was the D1.1:2015 and the next one doesn't come out until 2020.

Just curious as to what you actually have.

Brent thanks for your help. That answered my question.

That was a typo, meant to say M:2015
