I did a search for this and didn't come up with much.

I know AWS did some changing around with the classification of metal core wires. My question is, it metal core still treated the same as regular GMAW as far as welder certification?

For example: A welder is qualified to GMAW then wants to weld Metal Core. Is he still qualified to weld Metal Core?
Welder is qualified to FCAW and wants to weld Metal Core. Does he have to requalify to weld FCAW?

Thanks,
Brian

I don't have the specs in front of me so this is a paraphrase of my understanding.

MCAW filler wire is now covered by AWS A5.36 Specification for FCAW and MCAW for carbon and low alloy steel

MCAW performance qualification requirements are unchanged (AWS D1.1).  Meaning that MCAW=GMAW... Test Johnny on solid wire and he is also qualified for Cored wire for the same joints, positions, and other essential variables.

FCAW performance qualifications do not cross over to MCAW.

Now the CWB has a different outlook... But you didn't ask about that.

Ya that's what I thought. I knew AWS was messing around with the MCAW classification. As far as the CWB they classify MCAW as FCAW and has for a long time now. Thank You!!
