HELLO, restoring 37 tear old schooner made of a242 cortenA, with 7014 rod, local steel yard has 606 type 4 corten they say is the same thing (any coments on that) would like to use mig, what wire should i use, thank you for any help.
CORTEN is a registered brand of water and soil corrosion resistant steel made by US Steel. Get in touch with the manufacturer and ask for their advice.

I read that corten contains copper and encourage corrosion in salt water. It better have good paint. Jim
If what you have is equal to A242 then you can weld it with E70xx or equal electrodes, per a Hobart electrode chart I have. For a color match (color of base metal rust compared to weld metal rust) you can use E8018-C3 although single pass welds probably won't need that.
If your metal is similar to but not exactly equal to A242 then I would contact the steel manufacturer as Giovanni said.

The true corrosion resistance and color matching welds are only available in SMAW electrodes. They are 80XX-W1 and 80XX-W2. The 80XX-C3 electrode is also used alot as already mentioned. This would be available in a similar GMAW wire as ER80S-Ni1 or E80C-Ni1.
To weld Cor-ten and get a reasonable color match, a -W rated electrode is required. Other electrodes will give a strength match, but wil not give a good color match.
These electrodes are available as SMAW and FCAW-G, as far as I know.
There may be other offerings. Check at the major wire mfg websites.
Good Luck

thank you all for help, have left messages with a u.s.steel website but no response, but AWS has come thru, will come back for any future help,GAZELLE
In my experience, e-mails and website messages seldom work. Best thing is to give a telephone call. I don't hang the phone until I've got a satisfactory answer.
