Ive been teaching welding for a few years now and been doing a few small welding experiments like the 6010, 7018 in mineral oil to see the hydrogen, and the arc strike on the bend strap to watch it break.  I was wondering if any of you have some educational experiments for the welding world?

Do you have access to a hydraulic press. I would suggest one that has a capacity of say 50 tons? There is a demonstration that I did for one of our local colleges that tested the strength of fillet welds.

Hey Al,

Yes I do have access to one.  Trying to come up with more cool things to keep students from sleeping.

Sorry for the delay. No excuses, it just got put on the back burner.

I had the students work through a problem sizing a double fillet weld. Then we welded the sample and tested it in a hydraulic press. No need for a fancy tensile testing machine. The youngsters liked it so much they welded another sample to test it again!

The center punch marks are to ensure the proper weld size is deposited. Be forewarned, when the welds let go, parts go flying.

Looks interesting.  What's the test procedure?
