We are making some socket welds. The final fit up gap is 1/4" thats 1/8" on each side is this acceptable?

Thanks.

Are you referring to the diametrical clearance between the ID of the socket fitting and OD of the pipe or the gap between the end of the pipe and the shoulder of the socket fitting?

B31.1(2016) para 127.3(E) allows a maximum diametrical clearance of .080", i.e., .040" each side.

Is he asking about the diametrical clearance?

Never sure when standard terminology isn't used or a sketch depicting what is being asked isn't provided.

An 1/8 inch is not only too large, but it would indicate the fitting or the pipe isn't to spec. Perhaps they are mixing materials manufactured to metric and customary dimensions? Could they have mixed the fittings (possible if they are using small diameter pipe) or something is definitely not to spec based on the dimensions of the pipe OD and the fitting ID.

The possibilities are endless when we are not provided with all the details.

Well I’m back. After a year away due to a new position with my company.
I used to be under! Well I don’t remember my profile and I could not log in under my old user name. So this is me with a new name. I don’t have anything to add to this discussion other than what has already been said.
It took me awhile to figure out the changes that AWS has implemented. I take it we have a new forum that you pay for with membership? dues? That interesting. Well I hope to add to future discussions
