Hello all,
Greetings to everyone first of all.
My question is how does AWS D1.1 addresses the radiography inspection of fillet and PJP butt welded joints. Recently, we sent some samples for inspection. All the butt welds passed but fillet weld and partial joint penetration butt welds showed lack of penetration. We believe there is some technique issue in inspection of these joints.
Any help shall b highly appreciated.

RT and UT are not typically used to examine fillet welds or PJP groove welds. By design those weld types always have incomplete joint penetration. That is why they are not typically subjected to RT or ultrasonic examination. The unpenetrated root is easy enough to locate on the film or on the UT display.

AWS D1.1 requires volumetric examination of CJP welds that are subject to cyclic loading in tension that meet certain stress categories. Other than that, RT or UT is not mandatory unless the examination is required by the Owner (usually via the project specifications).

Good to see you are back into the swing of things.

Best regards - Al

Happy New Year!!!
