I'm a second year apprentice.  Need some tips on welding a 3/8" thick cres pipe with backing ring 6g position  With 1/8" mil 308L-15 rods.

My first suggestion would be to ask if you can use 3/32" rod! Second, running stainless stick rod is much different than welding with your typical 7018, you will have to manipulate the puddle quite a bit to get it to flow the way you want. Example: when running a vertical pass with 7018 one would normally (me, anyway) do a slow, slight movement side to side to get the puddle to flow out to the required width; with stainless rod you will need to move side to side at least three or four times as much and three times as fast in order to get it to flow out to the same width. I will just say that I HATE welding stainless!
