Can someone explain what the purpose of this standard and why use it? I have never used it or ever found a need for it. I have only done a light reading of it and it is somewhat confusing.
There are projects that are not fabricated to a recognized welding standard such as AWS' structural welding codes or ASME's construction codes. AWS B2.1 provides a rational approach to qualifying a welding procedure for those applications. It parallels in many respects ASME's Section IX.
