Up Topic American Welding Society Services / AWS Learning & Education / P number ,an essential variable in D 1.1??

Hello,
Recently a colleague said , P number is not an essential variable for welding procedure according in AWS D 1.1 .
Specification of P number in PQR is more than enough and need not be mentioned in the WPS.

How far is this correct. Please assist.

There are no P-numbers in D1.1. They play no roll in AWS D1.1

All the base metals listed as prequalified are low carbon steels or high strength low alloy steels with good weldability. The high strength Q&T or TMCP steels require qualification by testing. The steels are grouped by their group numbers of which there are four.

Now, if you look at AWS B2.1, the base metals are grouped by M-numbers, which are very similar to P-numbers, but they include additional alloys not common to pressure vessels or pressure piping as well as alloys found in ASME's B&PV construction codes and piping codes.

Thanks a lot for your wisdom.

Can you explain me more about Thermo-Mechanically Controlled Processed steels in detail please !!!!

The material, plate, is rolled at high temperature as is the normal practice, then the final rolling to bring the plate to the final dimension is rolled at a lower temperature to facilitate some strain hardening.
