Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Is argon necessary in TIG welding?
- - By Noel Date 06-01-2003 03:35
I just bought a used TIG welder that didn't come with an argon bottle. I want to try the welder out but without argon. Can I tig weld something simple without shielding gas?

Thanks for any info.

Maybe,if you found a collet big enough to hold a stick electrode it would work?

The real anwser is no,you need some shielding gas.Maybe use the stick setting to see if you like that.

like the other guy said, no...you won't even be able to heat up the material because the tungsten will vaporize faster than you can put it in the torch!
