Dear Gent'

please support to clarify the following:

welding procedure qualification test shall comply with AWS D1.1 and project specification.
project specification requires CVN test for welding procedure qualification test. This is understanding that it is only able to conduct CVN test for groove weld (full penetration) test coupons.

question is that: if welding procedure qualification test is performed for fillet weld (only macro test, hardness test), using welding consumable which has not been used in other project groove PQRs/WPSs. Does it require to weld other groove weld test coupon to verify toughness of welding consumable by CVN test (to support that fillet weld PQR). or can accept that fillet weld PQR without toughness verification for welding consumable (by CVN test).

Thank you!

If the 'Project Specs' call for CVN testing of the WPS/PQR, then you would have to do a groove weld PQR to satisfy that contract requirement.

Look to Part D - Requirements for CVN Testing.

Welding Consumable Verification testing is a separate matter.

CVN testing of WPS/PQR is testing to make sure the procedure and resulting weld meets impact requirements.

Welding Consumable Verification testing is to verify the soundness and tensile properties of the weld metal, and are only used if the consumable doesnt meet 4.12.3.1(1) & (2), or when required by contract.

if we refer to AWS D1.1 (2015) para 4.12.3 Consumables Verification test which is required for fillet welding procedure qualification test. it requires only bend test and tension test. it does not require or mention to CVN test. Could you please correct me if my interpretation is not exact.

If the project specification states that CVN testing is required than it does not matter what D1.1 says about qualifying fillets.

If you must do the CVN testing, than you must do the testing with groove welds.

The project specification may exceed the requirements for AWS D1.1..  That is my interpretation.
