Howdy,

I am in need of some advice, tips, etc. on welding 17-4PH. I am trying to get a procedure test qualified using the GMAW process.

Some info on the test...

1/2" 17-4PH
Flat Position
Single V
Backgouged
GMAW
98% Ar ---- 2% Oxygen
ER630

We have been able to pass Xray, but they are failing the bend tests. I am unfamiliar with this material so it is getting the best of us. Is there a certain preheat or post heat needed on this? I couldn't find anything in my recent research.

Thanks in advance for the help!

First, you need to verify the PH steel is annealed before welding. Likewise, it must be annealed after welding to ensure it is ductile enough to pass the bend tests.
