Hello all,

I am currently trying to determine the proper reinforcement weld size for 2 branch connections being welded on to a pipe spool, we are currently working under B31.1 code. One branch connection is a 4X8 weldolet and the other is a 3X8 weldolet being welded on to a 8" (.322 wall) pipe. After looking at B31.1 for branch connection figure 127.4.8(E) says 3/16" is the min for NPS 3 and smaller, is this 3/16" an industry standard or there another calculation to use. Would somebody be able to point me in direction of how to size the reinforcement weld for both connections.

Thanks!

Weld-O-Let, Thread-O-Let are trade names for an integrally reinforced branch fitting. If you look up the requirements for the integrally reinforced branch fitting you will see the groove portion of the fitting is required to be a complete joint penetration groove weld with a reinforcing fillet weld. The reinforcing fillet is intended to mitigate the stress intensification at the weld toe joining the branch to the run pipe. The strength of the joint is dependent on the "quality" of the CJP groove weld.
