Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / MIG weld stainless barcode tag (430 ss) to chrom moly billet
- By ronwork60 Date 08-07-2018 13:44
We produce stainless steel barcode tags (430 grade x 0.008" thick).  These tags are laser marked, high temperature resistant, and are used identify the steel billets as they come off the caster.

We supply automation (either hard automation or robot) to transfer the printed barcode tag to the torch-cut or shear-cut face of a steel billet and attach via MIG welding.  No problems attaching our tags to mild (low carbon) steel via MIG.  The attachment is crude, basically a small weld on both sides of the tag to hold it onto the billet.

For steel producers who get into medium carbon steel (0.30-0.59% carbon) would we encounter issues with MIG welding?

Our potential customer produces some AISI 4140 & 4340 grades.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and sorry if my question is too broad.
