Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / Qualification question for a CWI

Hello CWI's that are possibly on this forum,

I am currently a student attending a technical institute for welding possibly looking into a inspection career. If I were to test and certify to become a CWI under AWS QC1 Standard for AWS Certification of Welding, would I be able to inspect welds under ASME code or other codes?

A qualified Yes is the answer.

An AWS CWI is trained and examined in such a way as to be proficiant in a variety of code types and styles.  The practical exams for an AWS CWI (Part B) is designed to mimic structural, pipeing, and pressure vessel codes.

But as alway, the job itself will dictate the specific qualifications for inspection personel...   Some jobs are under the authority of regional or state directives that specify qnique qualifications for inspectors, others do not.

The CWI designation for most people is just the very beginning on a long road of an inspection career.

Hey Lawrence

I appreciate you taking the time to answering my question. I'm glad to know that its job dependent on what code you use as a CWI when your tested through the AWS. Your not required to follow AWS code, but whatever the contract documents require.

Thanks Again

Hi my name is Reed Baan Homfman. I am a second year welder at Mitchell Tech and we are studying the AWS D1.1 code book. I was wondering if an Inspector does not get his eyes checked every three years would he lose his licence?

If a CWI did not submit a valid Visual Acuity form at the time of Renewal (3, 6, 9 years), the certification (its not a license) would not be renewed and would expire. So yes.

Also when you would find that in the code boo
