Hello
I am currently in school for welding and I was wondering if the AWS has a prequalification for welding steel to aluminium?

Hi Dawson B,
What AWS welding code are you asking about? A few of the AWS welding codes have prequalifications(ie. AWS D1.1), but many of them do not. What welding process would be employed to perform this welding of steel to aluminum, in some of the codes certain welding processes are prequalified and others are not?

Dawson;

You'll get a bang out of this one!

Wait for it!

Try explosive welding, and to my knowledge, there are no prequalified procedures for explosive welding.

Al got to where I was leading.....steel and aluminum are like oil and water...they don't mix. However they have found ways of making them stick, ie. Explosive welding which is definitely not a  prequalified welding process in D1.1. Look in Clause 3 and they list the welding processes that AWS recognizes.
