Just wondering if anybody can tell me how the old AC buzz box stick welding machines regulate the amount of current being sent to the electrode? I've got a 100 some odd pound power transformer I salvaged from a dumpster that I tapped to give me an OCV of 60V, but it's putting out WAY too much current for welding anything practical with standard 1/8" rod. Thanks!

They use a metal shunt that slides into the center of the transformer core changing the magnetic coupling. When you turn the knob to change the current you are moving the shunt in or out.

There may be other methods but this is the one I am familiar with.

As a point of interest, I was told that microwave oven transformers use fixed shunts to limit the amount of current delivered if the magnetron happens to arc.
