Backing strip for single bevel butt eeld

Hi,
Is backing strip necessary for single bevel butt joint preparation ( corner joint of box beam)? The thickness of plates are 7 mm each.I am also not sure if partial or full penetration weld required. Welding process is GMAW. If necessary, what kind of backing strip is recommended?

What welding code is invoked? If it is the farm code, backing is required if someone is watching.

The design engineer rather than the code would establish the joint type. CJP or PJP..... It’s a pretty safe bet that CJP would be selected.

On an inside corner joint a backing fillet might serve the same purpose as a backing bar. Place backing weld, gouge to sound metal from the other side, clean gouge, weld CJP.

If D1.1 is the constitution code, there are prequalified details that might be used.
